Calendar of Poetic Stuff, Information, & Miscellany
with some mention of our friends
Today through September 2, 2010
NOTE: Most events are held on the first Thursday of each month at Bloomsburg Public Library, 225 Market Street, Bloomsburg (downtown, revitalized) PA. Poetry readings will start PROMPTLY at 7:30 pm. Exceptions! July & August – 7 PM start for POETRY OUTDOORS
March 4, 2010 - Katie Hays Poems from Katie Hays' first book, Dear Apocalypse (Carnegie Mellon 2009), have appeared or will be in: The Best American Poetry 2009, The Yale Anthology of Younger American Poetry, The Southern Review, and Gray's Sporting Journal. To be followed by an open reading. MC: Mike DeMarco
More about Katie Hays - Her chapbook, Some Monolith, was published this winter as part of the Black Warrior Review Chapbook Series, and contains seventeen poems from her in-progress second manuscript; other poems which have appeared or are forthcoming in American Poetry Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, and Poetry Northwest. Katie is currently finishing three years as the Emerging Writer at the Stadler Center for Poetry. She and her husband are hikers, canoeists, and soon-to-be parents (due in April).
April 1, 2010 - Wharton and all - This is part of the 'Big Read'. Bloomsburg and many other communities have committed to honor Edith Wharton's work in poetry and fiction this month. We are no exception and will be reading bits from The Age of Innocence, perhaps some poetry or a scene from one of her short stories. Open reading on optional themes "Innocence," and "Loss of Innocence”; period-clothing encouraged. MC: S. Brook
May 6, 2010 - BRASH Art Walk and the library venue. BRASH is best known for writing (art-inspired) poetry for Artomatic, an extravaganza in the Washington DC area, performing at Art For Change on Inaugural Day 2009, and dancing like everyone's applauding. BRASH's poetry has been featured at group shows at Studio Gallery (DC), Del Ray Artisans (Alexandria VA), and Workhouse Arts Center (Lorton, VA billed just below Rita Dove). Upcoming collaborations include shows with artists Brian Reed (Manhattan NY) and Steven Dobbins (Frederick MD). To be followed by an open reading. MC: Richard Brook
June 3, 2010 - Mulberry Poets & Writers – From the northeast portion of PA, poets and writers have been invited to present their works. To be followed by an open reading. MC: Karen Genzel
July 1, 2010 - Bloomsburg Town Park Pavilion, NE of lagoon; 7 PM – Theme: Jabberwocky, word play, sense and nonsense - it's very hard for a playful creative spirit to break through these tough, scary, and very serious times. Yet, sometimes looking through the lens of what seems to be nonsense, the unexpected, word jamming, we can unlock the mind, open up to new insights and discover a homeless truth that has been overlooked or shunned. To be followed by an open reading. MC: Carol Ann Heckman
August 5, 2010 - at the Kocher Park, Lightstreet - 7 PM - Theme: Things We Do With our Hands. We take our hands for granted, and they do miraculous things. To be followed by an open reading. MC: Dave Barsky
August 19, 2010 - Yes, we plan! At Panera 6:30 PM dinner; 7 PM conspiring.
September 2, 2010 - Lester Hirsh & Theme: September to Remember (perhaps memorize a poem to recite). Lester Hirsh, former editor, publisher of Bone & Flesh literary magazine, lives in his hometown of Shenandoah, PA. He makes most of his living as a troubadour poet, performing various concert venues, as well as artist-in-school residencies, and Special Needs Audiences. He was a 1997 finalist in the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter Contest, and a 2005 Grammy nominee for Best Spoken Word for selections from his CD, Mosaic II, Poems of An Ancient Order. And more about Lester Hirsh - Besides hosting Open Mike Poetry readings at All Things Good in Pottsville, he has also been a concert producer, allied with the Berks Bard Poets of Reading, River Poets of Bloomsburg, Stray Dogs Poets of Schuylkill County, and a staff member and performer for the Stillwater Poetry Festival. Lester holds a Bachelor of General Studies/Literature Degree. To be followed by an open reading.
The following are NOT at the library, but book them anyway, as they are worthy.
